Plums are a naturally sweet, slightly tart, and juicy fruit that can be relished on their own or transformed into a totally delicious chutney like this one! Try this spiced plum chutney recipe for a savory/sweet chutney experience.
This recipe is a combination of fresh plums and spices and has a harmonious balance thanks to the inclusion of fennel and cumin. Brilliant alongside chicken, cheese, pork, fish, and vegetables, the little hit of aniseed from the fennel makes this recipe something special.
Availability of ingredients
This is a great recipe to make when plums are readily available in North America, and this means anytime between July and October. I like to choose the sweetest, ripe plums around so that the chutney benefits from the natural sugar in the plums.
The rest of the ingredients in this recipe are likely already sitting in your cupboard, especially if you’re accustomed to making Indian, Mexican, or Asian food. If not, you can pick them up at your local grocery store, and they aren’t budget-breaking items at all.

About avocado oil

Avocado oil is an excellent choice of oil due to its versatility and neutral flavor. Made from the flesh of the avocado, this oil is well-loved for its high smoke point, making it suitable for frying, grilling, and roasting.
Avocado oil is also great to use in salads, marinades, and pestos and is a less-bitter choice than olive oil.
Avocados are renowned for their health benefits; here are some reasons to use this oil:
- Avocado oil is loaded with healthy monosaturated fats, making it a heart-healthy option when consumed in moderation

About fennel seeds

Fennel seeds are the dried fruit of the fennel plant and have a lovely fragrant sweet taste and smell. Fennel seeds are aniseed in taste and contribute this flavor profile to any dish they’re added to.
These seeds are often used in Indian and Italian cooking and are commonly found in curries, meat rubs, and baked treats. Fennel seeds are often used whole or ground, as well as in herbal tea blends.
Here are a few reasons to include this ingredient in your diet:
- Fennel seeds aid in digestion and soothe tummy aches.
- They act as a breath freshener when chewed.
- Fennel seeds are full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.
